USF – Dormitory Facility & Offices, San Francisco
Renovation and adaptation of the seven-story Lone Mountain building dating from 1932 that is located on the southern side of a steep slope. The project accommodated new dorm rooms, supportive social spaces, academic offices and a full seismic retrofit.
The dormitory accommodation was increased by adding a floor in a former dilapidated auditorium and by using the generous floor to floor heights to stack the beds with rooms in a creative way. Generous vertical light shafts that spanned multiple floors with expansive skylights were used to introduce natural light deep at the rear of this single aspect building that is built into the hill. This move reactivated and energized formerly low quality storage spaces into new qualitative office accommodation.
