Housing Competition – Accra, Ghana
This competition required entrants to design affordable self-build houses for a burgeoning middleclass population in Accra, the capital city of Ghana. The houses also had to be demountable and capable of relocation.
Solas carried out extensive research into building materials and construction techniques that prevail in West Africa. We developed a small 540 sq ft timber portal framed two story house clad in corrugated iron. This house accommodated bedrooms for two adults and two children with living, cooking and bathing facilities. It provides ventilated shelter in this hot climate and generates generous decks shaded by the house roofs that act as exterior living and cooking spaces.
The project was shortlisted in this competition.
