Sutter Health – Lakeside ED Canopy, Lakeport, CA
The goal of this canopy project was to provide shelter along an accessible route from a passenger drop-off to the entrance to the Lakeside Emergency Department. The design addresses the prevailing hot and cold climate conditions, accessibility and patient safety in a solution that integrates the existing site conditions with the surrounding landscape. It also provides a framework for future expansion of the canopy to the Surgery Center entry at the other end of the Emergency Department. This canopy project is composed of two elements. The first free-standing, curved canopy over the passenger drop-off zone provides a glazed shelter supported by cantilevered beams that sit on a single line of columns. The second higher solid canopy is attached to the Emergency Department exterior wall over its entry. It is supported off this wall by steel rods and a single column. Perforated metal panels along its sides provide shade without cutting off light. The lower curved canopy intersects below the higher orthogonal canopy to provide continuous shelter and a distinctive three-dimensional composition.
