LBNL Quantum Computing Center – Berkeley
6000 sq ft addition and renovation of a 60-year-old timber framed building set in a redwood forest on the grounds of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. This intriguing and challenging project accommodates a new quantum computing research facility comprising cryostat spaces, work rooms, offices, break area and conference room.
The original building with its glulam timber portal structure offered high quality clear span spaces that we riffed off to create the new addition. Transparency, light, visual and physical connection to the surrounding forest and the generation of qualitative exterior spaces and areas were key design drivers.
