Making Ground – Integrated Supportive Housing for the Developmentally Delayed
Solas in collaboration with non-profit groups that serve the Developmentally Delayed & Autistic populations have developed two models of supportive housing. These models examine how to get affordable land in appropriate locations. This generated two solutions: one that utilizes surface car lots by building over automatic car stackers and another that uses waterways with a floating community.
The two models also generate a variety of housing stock tailored to this impoverished and overlooked population. This includes everything from smaller one bed units, to larger family units for parents and children, to group homes. These units are intermingled and mixed with the occupants from the broader population in the larger car lot scheme and backed by on-site supportive facilities to break the cycle of isolation. The floating community contrasts with the car lot model because it is intentional or solely occupied by the developmentally delayed. This provides more variety of stock suitable for some but it is combined with a recreational pier and community garden to provide safe interaction with the wider community. Subtle changes in level and the use of sensory gardens create safe zones and territories giving occupants spaces where they can decide to advance or retreat.
